Here is a tall epithelial cell cut open to show the parts that let cells hold an electrical charge across their membrane. Finger-like microvilli crowd the top edge, and chunky channel and pump proteins stud the membrane around the sides. Inside, a domed nucleus with a nucleolus sits ringed by layered endoplasmic reticulum, with ridged mitochondria, a Golgi stack and scattered vesicles filling the corners. Junction proteins anchor the cell to its neighbors at the edges. An ornate bioelectricity teaching piece for a cell biology class, a science desk or a research office shelf.
