A pancreatic beta cell shown in cutaway, with a large nucleus wrapped by layered rough endoplasmic reticulum and stacked Golgi membranes. Round insulin granules with textured cores fill much of the cell, and several sit open at the membrane edge, releasing their contents outward. Mitochondria with folded interiors are tucked among the organelles.
