Here a voltage-gated sodium channel is sliced open down the middle so the pore can be followed from top to bottom. Ribbed segments line the channel walls, a narrow selectivity filter pinches the passage near the top, and a rounded activation gate closes off the lower end. Lipid bilayer blocks flank the protein on both sides, showing round heads over wavy tails. Smooth, rounded surfaces make the internal shape easy to read. A fine centerpiece for a neuroscience or cell biology classroom, or a display shelf of membrane proteins.
