Sliced open to reveal its insides, this measles virus cutaway shows a round particle studded with knobbed surface spikes all the way around. One wedge is removed so you can look past the thin envelope and matrix layer into a coiled bundle of ridged nucleocapsid strands packed inside. The rough, bumpy spikes contrast nicely with the smooth cut rim. It works as a desk display or a teaching model for cell biology classes explaining how a virus carries its genome and attaches to cells.
