Two rod-shaped bacteria link up in this stylized model of E coli conjugation, joined by a sex pilus bridge that carries a plasmid between them. Each cell is cut open to show a tangled coil of DNA and a small plasmid ring, while short hair-like pili sprout all around the outer walls. The connecting tube and the threadlike strand running through it make the transfer easy to see. It suits a microbiology classroom, a genetics lesson on gene transfer or a science display shelf of bacteria models.
