A taste bud cutaway reveals the cluster of cells hidden in the tongue that detect flavor. Tall, spindle-shaped gustatory cells bundle together inside a bulb-shaped shell, each showing an oval nucleus. At the top, thin microvilli poke out through the taste pore, while nerve fibers gather and run down from the base. The cut wall shows a layer of supporting cells along the edge.
