A synapse cutaway opens up the axon terminal to show the machinery of nerve signaling inside. Round neurotransmitter vesicles, each packed with tiny beads, crowd the terminal, with a folded mitochondrion near the top. At the bottom, several vesicles fuse with the membrane and release their contents into the narrow synaptic cleft. Below the gap, the receiving membrane is lined with receptor proteins. Smooth, flowing surfaces make each part easy to see. A great neuroscience model for a classroom, a study desk or a display shelf.
