Here is a Russian tortoise caught mid-stride, its rounded shell divided into broad scutes with layered growth rings. The blunt head peers forward with heavy-lidded eyes, while the thick front legs are covered in overlapping armored scales and tipped with stubby claws. The underside of the shell sits low over the chest, just as it does on the real animal. Set it on a display shelf beside other reptiles, or bring it into a biology classroom to show how a tortoise differs from a turtle.
