Meet a strange sea creature from the Cambrian, sculpted with five bulging eyes and a long clawed proboscis. The opabinia has a flat body ringed with overlapping segmented lobes along each side, and a fanned tail of upright blades at the back. Its grasping trunk reaches forward from under the head, ending in a small spiny claw. The ribbed surface and rounded eye cluster give it a lively, slightly comical look. It makes a fun display shelf piece for fossil fans and a great talking point in a classroom lesson on early animal life.
