Here is a magnetotactic bacterium, the microbe that steers by the Earth's magnetic field, sculpted as a rough rod-shaped cell. Along one side runs a neat chain of faceted magnetosome crystals, each one a small cut gem set into the body like beads on a string. From one end, a bundle of wavy polar flagella curls outward as if the cell were swimming. The lumpy, organic surface gives it a living feel. It makes a striking conversation piece for a biology classroom, a microbiology lab bench or a science display shelf.
