Seven coiled helices run straight through a slab of cell membrane in this archaerhodopsin model, the light-driven proton pump from ancient microbes. The membrane block shows rounded lipid heads on both faces with wavy tails packed between them, while the protein's ribbon-like helices span its full depth. Clumped loops and looping strands spill out above and below where the protein meets the water. A stylized but clear teaching model for membrane biology and bioelectricity lessons, or a bold piece for a science shelf.
