An openwork cage ornament holds a spiral conch shell inside a ring of slender curved ribs. The ribs sweep out from a segmented crown cap with a small hanging loop on top and gather again at a collar with a round bead finial underneath. The shell shows stepped whorls, rippled ridges, small knobs and a flared opening that can be seen between the bars. Everything is cleanly sculpted and solid, so it reads well from every side. It suits a Christmas tree, a window hook, a seaside display shelf or a shell collector's cabinet.
