Micrasterias, the striking desmid alga, is shown here as two mirror-image semicells joined at a narrow central isthmus. Each half fans out into deep lobes separated by raised ridges, and the outer margins bristle with sharp spines all the way around. Tiny bumps dot every lobe, giving the surface a rich texture that catches light well. The symmetrical, almost snowflake shape makes it a beautiful display piece and a memorable teaching model for botany or cell biology lessons on freshwater microscopic life.
