A monocyte cut open to show its large kidney-shaped nucleus curling through the middle of the cell. The cytoplasm around it is pitted with small vacuoles and lumpy texture, while a ruffled membrane of rounded folds and short projections rings the whole disc. Monocytes are the white blood cells that become macrophages, and the open face makes that bean-shaped nucleus easy to point out in a blood cell lesson, a cell biology classroom or a science display.
