Twelve lumpy subunits rise together in this organic model of a connexin 26 gap junction channel spanning two membranes. The column pinches in at the middle where the two halves meet, and its rough, bubbly surface shows each subunit as a long knobbed lobe running from top to bottom, with a small opening across the top face. The sculpted, almost coral-like form makes it a curious piece to hold and turn. It fits a cell biology display, a science desk or a shelf of molecular models showing how neighboring cells connect.
