A walnut cross section cuts away part of the hard shell to show the two wrinkled kernel halves inside, split by a thin central septum. The rough, pitted shell wraps around the folded, brain-like kernel lobes, and the seam where the halves meet runs clearly over the top. The detail makes a familiar nut easy to study up close.
