Sliced open like a tissue sample, this tuberculosis granuloma cross section shows the layered structure of the body walling off an infection. A smooth, flattened necrotic core sits at the centre, ringed by tightly packed rounded macrophage cells, a band of swirling elongated cells, and an outer cuff of small lymphocytes along the rough edge. The disc-shaped piece has no base and rewards close inspection with dense cellular texture. A strong teaching piece for microbiology, pathology or biology lessons on the immune response, and a striking specimen for a science display shelf.
