A flatworm eyespot cross section lays out twin pigment cups, the photoreceptor cells inside them and the optic nerve fibers leading away. The two cupped shells face outward, packed with fluted cell bodies, while rows of rounded nucleated cells meet at the center and gather into a trunk of nerve fibers that runs down into a nerve cord. It reads like a little tree of sight. A clear teaching piece for biology lessons on how eyes evolved, and an eye-catching specimen for a science display shelf.
