Side by side in one stretch of lipid bilayer, an ion pump and an open ion channel show the two ways cells move charged particles across their membrane. The pump on the left is a knotted protein mass with small ion spheres caught along its path and a bulky domain hanging below, while the channel on the right parts to reveal a clear open pore. Rows of lipid heads and wavy tails fill the slab between them. An excellent model for a cell biology classroom or a talk on bioelectric signaling.
