Strange enough to pass for an alien, this Euplotes ciliate shows the flat, oval body of a real pond-dwelling single cell. A dense fringe of curved adoral membranelles sweeps around the front like a feathered collar, while a row of raised bumps runs down the ridged back. Bundles of thick walking cirri splay from the rear and underside, giving the creature a crawling, almost menacing stance. Equally at home in a microbiology class, on a display shelf of tiny life or dropped into a sci-fi tabletop game as a bizarre space creature.
