STEP, the ISO 10303 standard behind SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape and FreeCAD exports, describes exact surfaces, yet a part with a missing face or a gap between patches still prints as an open shell. Fill Holes In STEP reads the file as a triangle mesh, caps each open loop, then remeshes and decimates it into a light closed solid.
